Minister Day commits to continuation of projects on counter-terrorism and police training programs in Pakistan

Islamabad, Pakistan— The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, met with Pakistani government officials to discuss future commitments related to drug enforcement, border security and counter-terrorism efforts.
"Reducing the twin threat of terrorism and the opium trade at its origins means safer streets not just in Pakistan and Afghanistan but also in Canada", said Minister Day. Minister Day also traveled to Quetta to meet with the Governor of Balochistan and to witness first-hand the security challenges at one of the busiest border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan. During his visit, Minister Day met with his Pakistani counterpart, Interior Minister, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, and the Director General of the intelligence service agency of Pakistan. Discussions led to a commitment on the part of Canada and Pakistan to work closer together in order to enhance Pakistan's capacity to tackle issues related to terrorism, effective border management and reducing drug trafficking. Pakistan's request for training in these critical areas from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) is testimony to our world class expertise. The Interior Minister of Pakistan expressed gratitude to Canada’s New Government for the contribution of 100 secure satellite telephones. "These phones will link border officers working in remote rural areas along the border and thereby render them more effective and thereby facilitate the execution of their duties", said Minister Day. "Any assistance provided to Pakistan to enhance border security is consistent with our commitment to ensure the safety of our troops in Afghanistan." Canada’s New Government is also supporting joint border management initiatives between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is why, over the last two months, the RCMP has assisted Pakistan and Afghanistan’s joint efforts towards greater security by conducting two Drug Precursors Workshops for Afghan and Pakistani law enforcement officials. "I am impressed with the work the RCMP is doing to help both countries to build their drug and law enforcement capacity", said Minister Day. "Such training provides an opportunity for a better understanding of each country’s concerns as well as the problems they face when engaging in joint investigations."
