Minister Day commends latest disruption to organized crime
April 05, 2007
The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement today in response to a successful series of arrests in Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia, related to an alleged organized crime operation involving Hells Angels biker gangs.
“Once again, policing agencies have worked together to break up an alleged gang-driven, drug-related criminal operation. With 169 charges laid, 31 arrests and the seizure of drugs, guns, vehicles and real estate, this bust will help make our communities safer. These drugs are now off our streets and these weapons can no longer be used to harm innocent people. Several law enforcement agencies cooperated to investigate and verify information, putting together facts and evidence in order to strike another major blow against organized crime. The Biker Enforcement Unit, led by the Ontario Provincial Police, continues to clamp down on illegal motorcycle gang activity. I would like to thank the more than100 officers who are part of this team and the support they received from 27 police tactical teams. This major joint forces police operation was a collective effort involving the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a host of municipal police forces throughout Ontario. I would like to commend all those involved on a job well done. Canada’s new government has made tackling crime a priority and that is why we are giving law enforcement agencies the tools and resources they need to keep our communities safe and our citizens secure.” Information: Mélisa Leclerc Director of Communications Office of the Honourable Stockwell Day Minister of Public Safety 613-991-2863 |
