Minister Day and Minister Fortier announce over $400,000 to support the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime

Montréal - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, and the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister Responsible for the Region of Montréal, today announced $404,102 in funding to support the Montréal-based International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC).

“Canada’s new government is proud to participate in this international crime prevention effort to make communities safer in Canada and other parts of the world,” said Minister Day. “The funding will help develop research on the most effective methods for preventing crime and tackling illegal youth gang activity,” he added.

“Montreal has international expertise in fighting crime, and this financial assistance will strengthen the city’s position as leader in that field. Our government is determined to tackle crime, and this financial aid will support this commitment,” said Minister Fortier.

The ICPC is receiving funding to help it work towards its mission of assisting cities and countries to reduce crime through effective and efficient preventative measures. This support will contribute to developing and maintaining a strong base of knowledge related to effective crime prevention from an international perspective.

Among other things, the ICPC will publish comparative analysis reports focusing on best practices and effective policies for preventing crime.

The ICPC is an international nongovernmental organization affiliated with the United Nations Program Network Institutes of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

Today's event follows a $10 million crime prevention announcement made on November 6, 2006 to support community-based crime prevention initiatives in Québec that address crime and street gang issues, through the National Crime Prevention Centre. Canada's New Government is getting things done for Quebec by increasing community action to prevent crime, develop and share knowledge of effective crime prevention strategies, and coordinate multi-level support for crime prevention.
